Good camping lanterns prove their worth
Good camping lanterns prove their worth for outdoors living, whether you're camping or hiking or just enjoying an evening in your own backyard.
Hikers or campers who really enjoy "roughing it" may be fine with a schedule dictated by sunrise and sunset, but most are thankful for the freedom and flexibility offered by quality camping lanterns -- to say nothing of the nighttime safety features of a dependable, portable light source.
Good lanterns these days may be the old-fashioned liquid fueled models that run on traditional "Coleman fuel" or camping fuel, also known as "white gas." There are other modern lanterns made to work safely using unleaded gasoline. Given the dependability of modern battery technology and LED lights, many of the better lanterns for campers are battery powered. (In fact, there are a number of quality outdoor lighting fixtures for your home and yard that are battery powered LED units.)
Quality battery powered lanterns for campers often incorporate the latest LED technologies and go way beyond being just glorified flashlights. Such light sources are capable of brightening your tent or entire campsite. They do so affordably and for hours at a time. Nighttime around the campfire, of course, seems much more satisfying to most campers than sitting huddled around a lantern. But when the fire has burned low and it's time to turn in, that trip to the nearby bathroom facility (be it outhouse or portable camping toilet) is a much more cheerful experience with a good lantern.
Probably most exciting of all is the growing array of outdoor solar lights that are making their way into the hiking and camping world. Although solar powered light at night seems like a serious contradiction in terms, it really is on the cutting edge of "green" technology and lets you enjoy a well-lit campsite while still being careful of the environment. Many solar powered lanterns are configured very much like a traditional camping lantern, but have an LED light source and rechargeable batteries to store the sun's energy and last for hours. They even have built-in hand cranks for those cloudy or rainy stretches all campers run into on the trail.
Topping the list of outdoor solar lights and solar light solutions for the campsite is a portable solar panel that hooks into a lantern. The panel itself is the size and shape of a small blanket and can be draped across a log or hung from a tree or bush facing the sun and generates 12.5 watts of electricity.
